Quickstart

When you start playing, you’ll see the map to the left, and the menu to the right.

In the menu, click each section header to show that section. The menus are as follows:

Menus

  • Status – Shows detailed information about your character, including status effects.
  • Inventory – Drag and drop inventory items to equip / remove them. Click the “magnifying glass” to learn more about an item. When an item is not worn, you can click the “check-mark” icon to use it, and “trash can” to permanently delete it.
  • Skills – Starts out empty, but when you learn skills they’ll show up here. “Techniques” require activation to use, either by a keyboard shortcut or the “execute” button in this section. “Proficiencies” are always active.
  • Journal – Shows a summary of important messages that have appeared while you have been playing.
  • Console – You can ignore this. Shows debugging information.
  • Help – Has a list of the controls to play the game, and a legend of what types of things you will see on the map. Definitely have a read through this section.

Map

The map is on the left. A key of what you see on the map is available under the Help menu. Your character, the @ symbol, is always in the middle of the map. Your line-of-sight and the area’s lighting affect what you can see.

In general, open tiles are open ground. The different colors are just to provide flavor.

Getting stuff.

When you start the game, there are some items you can pick up. Walk on top of them then press “g” for “get”. In your inventory, you can click the checkmark icon or drag-and-drop objects to wear / remove them. Weapons go in the weapon slot of course, while the offhand slot is reserved for tools like flashlights

Staying alive

Always keep an eye on your health. Health can be recovered with healing items such as bandages. Health is also fully recovered when you stay in a hotel and half recovered at save points.

Stamina is used up when you perform your skills. Stamina is recovered when you eat food or when you stay in a hotel.

Combat

Basics

Press f to fight the enemy you are targeting. Press tab to select your target. Alternatively, if you’re adjacent to an enemy, you can press a move button in their direction to target them.

Attack of Opportunity

If you move into a tile that is adjacent to an enemy you get an attack of opportunity. This is a single free attack that happens in the same turn as your movement. If an enemy is running away from you, you can get a free attack every turn you are chasing them if you stay on their tail. But be careful: enemies can do the same to you!

Fleeing

Due to how attacks of opportunity work, fleeing is not simple. The enemy will keep attacking you while they chase you! Thankfully, there are some useful skills that help you flee. When you learn one of these skills, try using the skill right before trying to run away. You start the game with no skills, but will learn new ones as you gain experience from fighting.
